(Note: I’m writing this in the middle of the work, so I haven’t properly checked the teaser yet.)
I’m happy to see the new looks of the gang, their new updates are incredible
Maybe Sten could have a design or pattern on his shirt, maybe with a color that isn’t too distracting to the eye.
Hayden and Dume’s designs are so cute!~ (Plus I enjoy the fact that you included her parts division)
As for the social stats, I am incredibly curious about each of these “voices” inside Morgan. Would it mean that the finished product would have multiple endings depending on the actions someone does in the game?
That’s right! The endings are partially dependent on Morgan’s growth with these stats, as well as his actions during the game.
There is a lot to unpack with having finished the teaser and all the info provided here. I feel like all of the design changes are steps in the right direction, and the one I like the most is surprisingly a character I kinda felt “meh” towards before, Honda. I’m very excited for the social stats part of this. It definitely feels like you have to do a lot more soul searching to pick make choices in this game compared to Snoot or Wani (while I love the choices in those games and what they represent, they did sometimes boil down to “be reasonable or lose your cool”).
After the demo, I really don’t feel like I know which direction this game is going (which is actually a very good thing). I had joked with friends before that this game had, unironically, “major Persona vibes”. That really got shattered with just the 20 minutes we were afforded here. I can honestly say I’ve never had an experience like the body horror and existentialism that Morgan faced. Even if you guys feel like you’ve taken from other games and media, the ideas are still presented in a way that feels fresh and exciting.
You’ve taken this form a project that I was happy to let sit on the backburner to my second most anticipated game coming soon (the Shredder’s Revenge guys are making a new beat ’em up). Very great progress, and I’m eager for more news.
Given the Disco Elysium inspiration, I wonder if there are going to be a lot of story branches (would certainly be cool but that would probably increase the workload exponentially) and if it’s possible for you to be locked out of certain dialog choices due to insufficient social stats. Either way the story teaser has worked its magic on me and I’m really interested in seeing how the story unfolds.
Multiple endings are one of our favorite things to do, I think they really bring out the tragedy/meaning in the game to be able to juxtapose how bad things can get with how great they can be. It’s too far away to say for certain how exactly the player should reach them, but I definitely do want varying endings for Exit. Maybe Morgan can relapse into covering himself up?
A comment that best summarizes my feelings about the demo in the shortest amount of time is just “More!” I want everything shown and more, and am very excited for the full release when it’s ready. Which, I think is a perfect showing for a demo. The inner voices dialogue and art felt as thick and delicious as a strawberry shake, definitely my favorite part. I think my only wish that won’t happen for this game is a VA with the same presence of Disco’s inner voice narrator. But, using my imagination, I read all the dialogue with his voice anyways, so this was kind of the perfect game. Good luck to your team, and I can’t wait to see more!
Voice acting I believe would be incredibly expensive and time consuming to implement, but it would be interesting, I agree. I do see now how it could be done, hearing people stream it and give them voices out loud
Love the demo, super hyped for the game. Ugh, it’s so hard to wait for things when they are so significant, of which I mean I appreciate these games so much I cannot simply tune out the passing of time for the release. mmmmh, gonna buy that merch boi, gonna buy that merch!
Exit 665 Theory
I had no where else to say this and I just want to get this theory out of my head as it’s been bothering me.
I want to talk about the different personalities, or parts of Morgan’s brain that now have a voice.
First off Gnosis: When I first played through the demo I took Gnosis as the rational part of Morgan’s brain but the more I replayed and rewatched the demo the more I think that it isn’t the right way to see it. Gnosis is logical yes but every part of Morgan operates on their own form of logic, which I’ll explain when I get to the others. As of now I see Gnosis as the book keeper, the librarian that is desperately trying to organize all the thoughts, memories, and information Morgan has after his brain was basically hit by and earthquake and all the books are on the floor. Gnosis may be the most important stat to keep up as if something happens to it, Morgan will likely suffer a psychological episode or breakdown as it’s the only that’s trying to keep everything together.
Quinquivers: From what I can see, Quin is the most immediate thoughts on the current situation but I have a feeling it will also go into deeper thinking, like when one is meditation or even asleep. Reflecting and pondering on past actions and what future ones you may make. It’s why there’s three heads, one being wide awake (immediate thoughts), another asleep (deep thinking), and the other seemingly yawning (between awake and asleep.)
Second Self (Purple): Second Self Purple seems to be: what if you can walk out of your own body and take a good look at yourself. Like if you were in a different body and you ran into previous self. It’s the one that is critical of you, the one that looks at all your flaws, it’s the one that demands you to be better, to be the ideal you, you know you can be. Hence why it’s depicted as a ghost and Morgan unsheathing a blade ready to fight to seize that ideal self.
Second Self (Gold): If second self purple is the one that is critical of you, that wants you to be the ideal you, Second Self (Gold) is the persona you actually don when the need arises. Like armor, but the armor is heavy and you can’t wear it forever, it’s tiring being the ideal person you want to be.
Vigor: Vigor is pretty obvious but there’s depth to this part of the brain. It may come off as illogical but I don’t think that’s right. It does operate on a form of logic but it’s to the extreme as it needs to be extreme to kick the body into gear. Folks will likely look at the violent parts of and conclude that it’s irrational but no, it’s not irrational it is Morgan’s thoughts and at the moment he is on high-alert, it’s why it’s a bit out of control in the demo. Morgan sees dangerous monsters everywhere and in himself, and what should you do if there’s danger? Run, Hide, Fight. It’s aggressive it needs to be, it won’t have the best plan, but it is still operating on a form of logic. I’d say it’s more predictable than illogical.
Faith: Faith is going to be interesting as it’ll be hard to pin down what it’ll compel Morgan to do. It’s less about what Morgan feels and more about those close to him. Those that he believes, trusts, and devotes himself too. As well as the ideals Morgan has and his moral compass. It’ll operate on what Morgan should do in order to keep those dear to him close and safe, not compromise his integrity, and to be true to what he believes is right.
Volksgeist: There isn’t much to go off of in the demo for Volkgeist but the way I see, it’s the part of the brain that actually entertains the illogical. The one that goes, “Hey, maybe it was a ghost, or maybe it was magic. If there’s no other explanation that maybe we are dealing with something supernatural.” It seems silly at first, but it can lead to different perspective of thinking that can lead you to the answer, besides we’re in a world full of monsters after all.
Social Accounting: Pretty self explanatory. It’s in the name. I don’t have much to say on it, other than it’s based on how others see you. When you make a decision you’ll think how it’ll affect what folks think about you. It’s not a moral compass it’s image, and to many that is a precious thing to keep flawless, even if you have to lie to do it.
Those are my thoughts, and they’ll definitely change as more and more of the game comes out and I can’t wait to see if I was right or terribly wrong.
